Free tool
Free wall label generator
Add each work below, build the label sheet, and print. Standard museum-style label content: artist, title and year, medium, dimensions, and an optional price or courtesy line. Runs entirely in your browser.
What goes on a wall label
The convention, top to bottom: artist name, then title in italics with year, then medium, then dimensions, then the price or a courtesy line. Keep mediums in the exact phrasing of your catalogue record so labels, checklists, and the price list never disagree in front of a collector.
Printing and mounting
Print on heavy matte stock, trim on a guillotine rather than scissors, and mount level at a consistent height (typically 152 cm to centre alongside the work). Print one spare sheet; opening nights eat labels.
Labels that generate from the catalogue
Typing label data twice is how dimension errors reach the wall. When the works live in art inventory software, labels generate from the record, and a correction in the catalogue corrects the label file. The exhibition management guide covers the full document chain for a show.
FAQ
- Is anything uploaded when I use the generator?
- No. Labels build and print entirely in your browser. Closing the tab clears them.
- Should prices appear on labels?
- House style varies: prices on labels, a separate price list, or "price on request". Whichever you choose, keep it consistent across the show and matching the exhibition price list.
- What size should labels be?
- Most galleries print between A7 and A6 per label. Print the sheet and trim per card; the cards are sized to read at arm's length without dominating the wall.
- How do I do labels for an edition?
- Include the copy number in the dimensions or medium line, e.g. "edition 4/20". The edition calculator helps plan the run numbering first.
- Can labels generate automatically for a whole show?
- Yes, when works and exhibitions are records in one system: see exhibition management software. The label file builds from the checklist.
