E-commerce PlatformsArt.Industries vs Shopify

An e-commerce platform is built to put products in front of buyers and take them through checkout, whether online or in person. A catalogue-first platform begins with the objects themselves: what they are, where they have been and who owns them. Commerce can follow from a public shop, a private presentation, an enquiry or an invoice.

Where they differ

A record for each object

Shopify products can carry custom fields, but its native inventory model is built around products, variants and quantities. Art.Industries gives a unique object or edition copy its own record, with its number, location, owner, price, condition and history.

Sales that begin privately

Shopify supports draft orders, reservations and payment terms. Art.Industries also keeps enquiries, offers, holds, private presentations, invoices, deposits and instalments together, so a sale can begin with a conversation rather than a public product page.

The shop is optional

Shopify is designed around commerce channels and checkout. In Art.Industries, a public shop is optional. The same catalogue can support private presentations, invoices, contacts and events even when nothing is offered for sale online.
