Galleries and museums hang art so the centre of each work sits 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor, at average eye level. Enter the size of your framed work and how far its hanger sits below the top edge, and you get the exact nail height for that gallery standard.

Height on the wall
Centre of the work from the floor
The work, framed
Use decimals or fractions: 24.5 or 24 1/2.
On the back
The distance from the top edge of the frame down to where it hangs: the wire pulled up tight toward the top, or the D-rings or sawtooth. It is how far the work sits below its nail.
Only for works that hang on two D-rings: the distance between the rings, centre to centre. Leave it empty for a wire or a sawtooth, which take one nail.

Measurements are rounded to the nearest ⅛ in or 1 mm.

Hanging tips

How to hang art at gallery height

  1. Choose the centre height

Hang the centre of the work at 57 inches (145 cm), the gallery and museum standard. In rooms with high ceilings, 60 inches (152 cm) sits better. Use one height for the whole room so every work shares a centre line.

  2. Line up works of different sizes

A row reads as one group when the works share a line. Centres are the gallery default. Tops give a clean edge under a shelf or picture rail, and bottoms give a steady base line. Keep the middle of the group at eye height, and work out each nail on its own, since every frame has its own hanger.
